Youth Opportunities with Councils
Hi everyone and welcome to Youth Week 2023! We have so many fantastic articles for you this week, so stay tuned!
Do you want to make a change in your community? Would you like to be involved in your Local Council and what programs they run/how young people’s views are represented? Well, then you’re in luck! Many Councils within SA have their own versions of a ‘Youth Advisory Committee’ (or YAC) that you can get involved with.
Firstly, if you’re unsure of what Local Council area you’re in - the Local Government Association of SA has created this handy map to find out which Council your suburb is in!
In alphabetical order, here are the resources you will need to get engaged within your local community/Council!
Adelaide Hills Council, Youth Leadership Program
In this Program, young people aged 12-25 are able to practice their public speaking, leadership, and event management and meet other young people from their Local Council area.
Campbelltown City Council, Youth Advisory Committee
In this Committee, young people aged 12-25 can assist Council in developing and running youth projects and initiatives and provide recommendations to Council on matters relevant to local young people.
Clare and Gilbert Valleys Council, Youth Advisory Committee
In this Committee, young people aged 12-25 can make decisions on youth issues, as well as advocating on behalf of young people within their region.
Gawler Council, Youth Advisory Committee
In this Committee, young people aged 15-25 can make a difference in the community, as well as being a part of Local Government decision-making.
Regional Council of Goyder, Youth Advisory Committee
In this Committee, young people provide a link between the Goydor community and their decision-makers, as well as providing strategic input on relevant Council policies and strategies and key issues for young people.
City of Holdfast Bay, HoldUp Youth Committee
In this Committee, young people aged 12-25 represent other youth who live, work or play within the Holdfast Bay area. They organise events and activities for youth, as well as providing opportunities for young people to give feedback to their Local Representatives.
District Council of Karoonda East Murray, Youth Action Committee
In this Committee, young people aged 12-25 meet to discuss youth issues, community events and take part in leadership forums and self-development activities.
District Council of Lower Eyre Peninsula, Cummins Youth Advisory Council
In this Youth Advisory Council, young people aged 12-24 are able to get involved in their communities in various ways, as well as getting to know other young people in the areas where they live, work, and play.
City of Marion, Youth Collective Committee
In this Committee, young people can get involved in their local community and create action on issues such as safety and security, mental health, the environment, arts and music, education and technology.
City of Mount Gambier, Youth Advisory Group
In this Youth Advisory Group, young people can get involved with various initiatives such as Youth Week, the Mount Gambier Christmas Parade, the Mount Gambier Futures Paper for City Development and other projects.
Murray Bridge Council, Youth Action Committee
In this Committee, young people aged 12-25 can influence decisions that will impact young people, contribute to important community development projects, and plan and manage youth activities, initiatives and events.
City of Onkaparinga, Onkaparinga Youth Committee
In this Committee, young people aged 12-25 meet regularly to advocate for young people and drive change within their community. Their focus is on ensuring youth spaces and programs are accessible for young people, as well as connecting youth with decision-makers.
City of Playford, Youth Advisory Committee
In this Committee, young people are able to meet and connect with other youth in their Local Council area. They also lead and develop youth events and projects within the community.
Roxby Downs Council, Youth Advisory Committee
In this Committee, young people aged 12-18 make a difference in their community through planning, promoting, and delivering youth-oriented events, programs and services to Roxby Downs.
City of Tea Tree Gully, Youth Leadership Program
In this Program, young people aged 15-22 develop leadership skills, get involved in designing, planning, and delivering Council youth events.
District Council of Tumby Bay, Youth Advisory Committee
In this Committee, young people aged 12-25 learn about their community, their Council, and how to make a difference.
Whyalla City Council, Youth Advisory Committee
In this Committee, young people aged 12-25 organise activities, advocate for young people in their community, and meet other like-minded youth in their Local Council area.
District Council of Yankalilla, Fleurieu Coast Youth Advisory Committee
In this Committee, young people aged 12-25 meet regularly to plan events, determine the risks and barriers involved in them, work through issues, and assist in the delivery of local events and activities for youth.
