Zach Bates is the Super2 Champion
Following an entertaining Super2 series, it came down the final race of the season. Zach Bates was crowned champion, nudging out both Aaron Cameron and Kai Allen.
“It feels pretty good, unbelievable to be honest. Aaron and I fought it down right to the last race. It was an exciting battle and he did a great job,” Bates said after winning the championship.
Bates will be joining Craig Lowndes in his wildcard entry next year at Bathurst, so will be departing from Walkinshaw Andretti United come season’s end.
“I honestly can’t thank Walkinshaw Andretti United enough, obviously my driving and my personal development as well. It’s been an amazing journey.
“It’s exciting to be joining the Supercheap Auto, Triple Eight Wildcard with Craig Lowndes.
Bates has been close to Supercars champion, Will Brown, he opened up to how the Red Bull driver had been with him;
“Will’s been an amazing mentor of mine, just providing me with the driving stuff, but also the off track stuff. How to deal with the media and the work yourself up with a profile.
He said that he was looking forward to celebrating both championships with his mentor;
“It’s super exciting for him to win a championship, not everyone expected him to go there and win one straight away.
Bates attempted a burnout across the line, however, he didn’t let that stop him;
“I almost lost it on the straight, I’ve never done one so I gave it my best shot, it wasn’t the prettiest thing in the world, but it’s always cool when you do one.
