Artist Profile: Asha Southcombe / @ashasouthcombe

Asha Southcombe (she/her) is a Adelaide based artist who is currently undertaking a residency at carclew. She has recently graduated her honours degree in Contemporary Art at UniSA.

I am an emerging artist and curator practicing on Kaurna land. In 2021 I graduated Honours in Art and Design at UniSA after completing a Bachelor of Contemporary Art in 2020.

My creative practice is heavily based around the meditative act of mark making, working predominantly through the medium of graphite and most recently scratch board. I am fascinated by entanglements of the human and more-than-human, examining these relationships through the theory of queer ecology.

The repetition in shading, and concentration of studying my subjects becomes very self-reflective and durational. It gives me a greater appreciation and understanding of the subjects I depict, as well as time to reflect on my own personal experiences and how the subject resonates with me.

This year I received the role of curator-in-residence at Carclew, working alongside a group of other incredible creatives within the Sharehouse residency. This opportunity combines my passions of working alongside other creatives, with engagement of the wider community in the arts. I will curate four exhibitions across this year accompanied by community engagement activities that have a strong focus on inclusivity and accessibility.
